In PSALM 81:9a, it is also written and I quote, “There shall no strange god be in thee.” The strange gods that were in the daughters of Zion, which made them to be haughty, incurred the anger of God. These strange gods in them, were the necklaces on their necks, the bracelets and the expensive rings on their hands, the tablets of perfumes, the ornaments on their feet and legs, the nose jewels et cetera. Because of these strange gods, God said He would plague their heads with scabs and strip them of all those strange gods and of all their seductive dresses, which exposed their bodies. And, that instead of the odour of their perfumes, He would make them stink; instead of their well-decorated hair, they would be made bald. And burning instead of their beauty – ISAIAH 3:16-24.
In GENESIS 35:2, again it is written and I quote, “Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, put away the strange gods, that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments.” In GENESIS 35:4, it is written and I quote, “And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods (idols) which were in their hands, and all the EARRINGS which were in their ears, and Jacob hid them…” Earrings were some of the strange gods that were put away by Jacob’s household.
In MATTHEW 19:16, 21-22, a young man came to Jesus so that he might inherit eternal life, but he could not inherit it because he found it difficult to part with his great possession, which had become his strange god or the idol in his heart. This means that idols in the heart can make the people of God to forfeit or to lose eternal life. The people of God are enstranged from God through the idols or the strange gods in their hearts – EZEKIEL 14:5. Their sorrows are multiplied – PSALM 16:4. They are also defiled – EZEKIEL 22:4. Because of the danger of idols or strange gods to the souls of believers in Christ, hence God is committed to doing the work of cleansing of all the idols in the hearts of believers in Christ, if only they will endure the hardness of the truth, which is the clean water God spoke about in EZEKIEL 36:25, and I quote, “THEN WILL I SPRINKLE CLEAN WATER UPON YOU AND YOU SHALL BE CLEAN: FROM ALL YOUR FILTHINESS AND FROM ALL YOUR IDOLS, WILL I CLEANSE YOU.” Idolaters shall not inherit the kingdom of God, because they have other “gods” before God, except they repent!
