Taboos and superstitious beliefs and the tradition of the land are all lies, vanity and unprofitable things, which were inherited by forefathers – JEREMIAH 16:19b.
The doctrine of taboos, is touch not, taste not, handle not! – COLOSSIANS 2:21. And many believers in Christ are in Satan’s captivity, because they believe and obey these doctrines. There are certain trees, in some villages, for example, which must not be touched or cut down, because such trees, according to the tradition of the elders, have been dedicated to certain gods of the land.
There are also certain meats or certain kinds of foods that are forbidden to be eaten amongst some tribes, or else, if they are eaten, according to superstition, the people will be afflicted with certain, incurable sicknesses. For example, amongst some tribes, the people are commanded to abstain from eating snails, crabs, snakes, pigs et cetera, which are created by God to be eaten, by believers in Christ, who know the truth, and believe that every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer – 1 TIMOTHY 4:3-5.
In many villages, there are various superstitions, in some supernatural powers or in certain omens. For example, there is the superstition that sneezing means that one’s name is being mentioned somewhere, either for evil or for good. There is also this superstition that Kola-nut is life, whereas Jesus is the way, the truth and the life – JOHN 14:6. Another superstition is that the itching of the palms, is an omen of prosperity or riches, yet to come!
There is also the superstition that libation is unto the ancestors, whereas it is the pouring out of drink offerings unto other gods, thereby bringing the people into Satan’s bondage because of having fellowship with the demons behind these gods. This provokes the Almighty God to anger – JEREMIAH 7:18. The people of God are warned against having fellowship with these demons, by being present at such libations – 1 CORINTHIANS 10:20.
Tradition, superstition and taboos are transgressions of the commandment of God, thereby making vain, the worship of believers in Christ who believe in them and obey them – MARK 7:7-8. That is why Christians are warned by the Spirit of God not to be unequally yoked together with unbelievers, and that they must come out from among them, or else they would be defiled by these unbelievers, who are partakers of these abominable idolatries of tradition, taboos and superstitions. If Christians do not come out, as commanded by the Lord Almighty, they cannot be accepted by God, as sons and as daughters! – 2 CORINTHIANS 6:14-17, 18.
Every Satanic stronghold of tradition, taboo, or superstition, and their imaginations in the hearts of the people, can only be pulled down and cast down by the word of truth, which is quick and powerful – 2 CORINTHIANS 10:4-5; HEBREWS 4:12.
